About the Role
As our Senior Medical Director for the UK, you will serve as the most senior medical authority in the market and a key member of the UK Leadership Team. With an ambitious oncology portfolio and a strong partnership with the NHS, including initiatives like the NHS Cancer Vaccine Launchpad, this role is pivotal in shaping BioNTech's transition into a commercial-stage oncology leader. Reporting to the UK Country Lead and collaborating with regional and global medical leaders, this is a uniquely hands-on leadership role requiring a founder mentality to establish a world-class medical affairs function in the UK affiliate; and strategic vision, compliance expertise, and scientific excellence to drive impactful outcomes for patients and healthcare providers while advancing BioNTech’s mission.
Your Contribution
Develop and execute a comprehensive medical strategy for oncology in the UK, aligning global priorities with local needs
Serve as BioNTech’s primary medical expert in oncology, providing scientific insights to internal teams and external stakeholders
Build relationships with key opinion leaders (KOLs), healthcare professionals (HCPs), patient advocacy groups, and national agencies such as NICE
Lead clinical development efforts by supporting global trials executed in the UK and overseeing collaborative studies and real-world evidence projects
Build and lead a high-performing UK medical team, fostering a culture of launch excellence while ensuring alignment with BioNTech’s overarching values
Ensure strict adherence to the ABPI Code of Practice, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards, including by acting as an ABPI Code final medical signatory
A Perfect Match
Medical degree (MD) required; advanced degrees in oncology or related fields preferred (e.g., PhD, MBA)
Extensive experience (10+ years) in medical affairs or equivalent roles within pharma/biotech industries; NHS experience welcomed alongside substantial industry background
Proven leadership experience (5+ years) in oncology (solid tumours and/or immunotherapy), including UK product launches
Significant leadership experience in engaging with KOLs, HCPs and patient advocacy groups in the UK, and national agencies including NICE, including experience in leading a Field Medical team
Deep understanding of UK regulatory/compliance frameworks, and experience as an ABPI Code final medical signatory preferred
Strong organizational agility combined with a “hands-on” operational mindset to build functions from scratch while delivering on high-level strategies
Exceptional communication skills in English with the ability to translate complex topics into audience-specific formats
